In the heart of Sarasota’s lively Rosemary District, a remarkable transformation is underway! The Colson Hotel, once a symbol of resilience and a cherished sanctuary for Black Americans, is set for a vibrant revival. Although the building has seen better days, a dedicated community is coming together to restore its former glory.
After a year of thoughtful negotiations, the visionary registered benefit corporation DreamLarge took a significant step forward by acquiring this historic landmark last December. This acquisition is a beacon of hope, preserving the rich Black heritage of the city and showcasing the power of community collaboration. Key contributors to this uplifting endeavor include the Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservation, the city of Sarasota, Gulf Coast Community Foundation, and inspiring leaders from the local Black community.
According to DreamLarge founder Anand Pallegar, "The successful preservation of the Colson Hotel is a testament to the strength, passion, and resilience of our community." He emphasizes that this effort proves that when people unite for a meaningful cause, amazing change occurs. The Colson is not just being saved from demolition; it is entering a new chapter that honors its legacy while shaping a bright future for Sarasota.
The Colson Hotel has a rich history, dating back to the early 1920s when it served as one of southwest Florida’s only hotels for Black travelers. During a time of segregation, it became a safe haven, fostering hope and camaraderie among its guests. Rev. Lewis Colson, a former enslaved person, and his wife Irene were pioneers in Sarasota, and their namesake hotel reflects their invaluable contributions to the community.
Once a lively hub where entertainers and athletes gathered after performances and games, the Colson Hotel was a vibrant space filled with laughter and shared experiences. Although it experienced various changes over the decades, including a transition to the Hotel Palm and eventual disrepair, the spirit of the Colson remained alive in the hearts of many.
In a wonderful turn of events, when the hotel was at risk of being demolished, community members rallied together to advocate for its preservation. The Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservation recognized the Colson as one of its "Six to Save," highlighting its importance to local history. Thanks to the combined efforts of passionate individuals and organizations, the hotel was saved from an uncertain fate.
Looking ahead, the future of the Colson Hotel is filled with exciting possibilities. DreamLarge envisions transforming it into a vibrant community space that honors its historical roots while welcoming future generations. Plans may include a jazz club, a community center, or even a hotel that reflects the rich culture and history of the area.
Pallegar is committed to engaging the community in shaping the Colson’s new purpose, ensuring that every step of the restoration process is rooted in authenticity and respect. His dream is to one day pass ownership to the Black community, allowing them to continue the legacy of this cherished landmark.
The story of the Colson Hotel is just beginning, and with each effort to restore it, the community is weaving a narrative of hope, inspiration, and resilience that will resonate for generations to come. As they embark on this journey, the Colson stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when a community comes together for a shared vision.
