Firefighters' heartfelt note brings joy to homeowner after Palisades Fire

Tony Nesburn, a resident of Pacific Palisades, was filled with hope as he awaited the chance to return to his home following a devastating wildfire that swept through his neighborhood last month. His home, which overlooks the beautiful ocean, held cherished memories of his beloved wife, Cristina Kenney, who had passed away just a year earlier. The items she left behind were not just belongings; they were treasures filled with love and sentiment, and Tony fervently hoped they had been spared from the flames.

On January 24, a wave of joy washed over Tony and his family when they discovered that his home had been miraculously saved. Upon returning, Tony found a heartfelt letter in his mailbox from four courageous firefighters detailing their heroic efforts to protect his home. Their compassion and dedication shone through in every word:

“We are truly sorry for the devastation your neighborhood has faced. It’s heart-wrenching, and we can only imagine the impact it has had on everyone affected. When we returned a few days later, we felt immense relief knowing we had saved your house. The home next to yours was ablaze, and we were able to stop the fire from reaching your side door while protecting your deck and roof.

Since then, we have found solace on your deck, taking in the stunning view of the Pacific Ocean, which provided us with moments of peace amid the chaos. The pink ribbon, if it’s still there, is a symbol of pride for us—it signifies that your home was saved!

Please know that you and your neighbors are in our thoughts as you begin to rebuild and recover.”

With heartfelt support, El Segundo Fire Dept. Engine 31 “C” Platoon Levi, Steve, Matt, and Jason

In a wonderful twist of fate, Tony and his family soon reached out to the firefighters from El Segundo and learned that they had taken selfies on Tony’s deck, celebrating their successful mission. This led to a heartwarming public ceremony in Los Angeles, where Tony met the firefighters for the first time to honor their bravery.

Tony’s cousins expressed just how significant it was that all of Cristina’s cherished belongings had been preserved. Ana de Luna shared, “He is still mourning her loss, but it truly felt like a miracle. We all believe Crissie was helping the firefighters from the afterlife.”
