Three Rescued Orangutans Joyfully Return to Their Forest Home!

In a shining moment for conservation, Mary, a brave orphaned orangutan, has joyfully returned to the lush jungles of Borneo after her rehabilitation journey. Her release into the vibrant Busang Ecosystem marks a wonderful achievement for great ape conservation.

For four enriching years, Mary thrived at the Bornean Orangutan Rescue Alliance (BORA) Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, where she learned to navigate the wild and embrace her independence. Now, she is back in her natural habitat, surrounded by the beauty of the jungle she calls home.

The Orangutan Project, a dedicated organization committed to the protection of Critically Endangered orangutans, proudly shared this uplifting news. Mary’s liberation was not a solo journey; she was joined by her cherished friends Jojo and Bonti, who also now roam free in one of Borneo's precious remaining habitats.

Mary’s adventure began in February 2019 when the compassionate BORA team rescued her from a small town in East Borneo, where she had been kept in captivity. As a young orangutan, she faced the challenge of learning to survive in the wild, which she tackled head-on at BORA’s Jungle School. With the love and guidance of skilled caregivers and the camaraderie of fellow orangutans, Mary honed her essential survival skills.

In October 2024, Mary took a significant step forward in her rehabilitation. She, Jojo, and Bonti moved to a pre-release island, where they spent three months polishing their forest skills, preparing for their exciting return to the wild.

Leif Cocks, the founder of the Orangutan Project, reflects the spirit of this success: “The story of Mary, Jojo, and Bonti is a testament to what’s possible when we unite together.” He emphasized the importance of protecting these remarkable creatures and expressed pride in the long-term support, medical care, nutritious food, and jungle training provided at the BORA rescue center.

On January 10th, the trio embarked on a thrilling 10-hour journey by car and boat, culminating in their release. With confidence and excitement, Mary, Jojo, and Bonti ventured into the forest, eagerly climbing into the canopy to embrace their new life of freedom.

Mary's inspiring journey from rescue to liberation was made possible through the generosity of donors participating in the Orangutan Project’s Adoption Program. Their support plays a vital role in restoring and protecting these amazing beings, reminding us all of the goodness that can arise when we come together for a noble cause.
