Entrepreneur Turns Old Cement Bags into Solar Backpacks for Kids' Night Reading

Soma Bags: A Bright Idea Lighting Up the Future!

In the heart of Tanzania, a wonderful local entrepreneur is making waves by turning old cement bags into stylish, eco-friendly backpacks that come with a delightful bonus: a small solar panel to power a reading light! This innovative project not only helps to reduce waste but also brings the joy of learning to rural children, allowing them to study after dark.

Thanks to the brilliant vision of Mr. Innocent James from the Mwanza region, these amazing Soma Bags have garnered the support of the United Nations Development Program, showcasing their incredible potential to solve pressing challenges in the community.

Soma Bags employs 85 talented rural workers, and the demand for these backpacks is soaring—an impressive 13,000 bags are needed each month! While they strive to meet this demand, the enthusiasm and dedication of the team shine through in every bag they create.

Innocent's journey began with a fond memory of studying by the flickering light of a kerosene lantern. He realized that many households still rely on this outdated and costly lighting method. Inspired by a university professor who ingeniously integrated solar power into his clothing, Innocent had a lightbulb moment! He decided to sew flexible solar panels onto the backpacks, providing a safe and affordable light source for children eager to learn.

Since starting this heartwarming venture in 2016, Innocent has been crafting around 80 bags each month, priced between $4.00 and $8.00—comparable to the cost of running a kerosene lantern for just 15 days! With support from the UNDP’s Funguo Innovation Programme, funded by the European Union and the UK Government, Innocent's vision for sustainable solutions and educational opportunities is blossoming.

The impact of Soma Bags has been nothing short of transformative! Children now have a reliable light source to read and study at night, leading to improved academic performance and a newfound love for learning. The bags also allow them to stay connected with family and friends, opening up a world of information and communication.

Moreover, this fantastic initiative is making a positive difference for the environment by repurposing an impressive 200,000 cement packing sacks each month, keeping them out of landfills and off the streets.

As Joseph Manirakiza of the UNDP beautifully puts it, “There is a crop of young people in Tanzania who are coming up, and they have realized that they have to take the future into their own hands.” Innocent is a shining example of this new generation, using his talents to create meaningful change.

Let’s celebrate the spirit of innovation and community with Soma Bags! Share this uplifting story with your friends and spread the joy of bright ideas that are lighting the way for a better future!
