Teen Launches Nonprofit, Recycles 625,000 Batteries with Youth Support!

Nihal Tammana, an inspiring young leader, embarked on a remarkable journey at just 10 years old. After hearing a news report about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries and their impact on the environment, he felt compelled to take action. This passion led him to establish the nonprofit organization, Recycle My Battery, and now, at the age of 15, Nihal has achieved the incredible feat of recycling over 625,000 batteries!

Nihal's initiative has made recycling more accessible by placing over 1,000 battery bins in schools, libraries, and businesses. This thoughtful effort allows everyone to participate in protecting our planet. For those interested in joining this important mission, they can visit RecycleMyBattery.org for guidance on how to turn their schools and businesses into battery recycling champions.

Nihal’s impact stretches beyond the borders of the United States. His story and the importance of battery recycling have been featured in a German educational textbook, helping to educate young minds about this critical issue. Additionally, he is collaborating with B-cycle, Australia's largest battery recycling company, to implement his initiative in schools throughout the country.

Currently, Nihal is working on an innovative Residual Charge Project, which aims to develop a prototype that captures leftover energy from used batteries. This exciting project has already garnered validation from an expert at the University of Waterloo, showing how ingenuity can contribute to sustainability.

Through Recycle My Battery, Nihal engages over 1,000 youth volunteers around the world to raise awareness about the harmful effects of disposing of batteries in the trash. Research conducted by the nonprofit revealed that a typical alkaline battery can significantly harm soil quality, highlighting the importance of proper recycling practices.

With the ambitious goal of recycling 1 million batteries by the end of the year, Nihal invites communities and organizations to join The Battery Challenge. This initiative gamifies participation in schools, making it fun and engaging for students to contribute to a cleaner and healthier planet.

Nihal's inspiring message is simple yet powerful: “If I can make the Earth a better place to live, you can…. If you can, we all can.” His story serves as a reminder that every small action can lead to meaningful change. Let’s spread the word about this wonderful initiative and inspire others to join the movement for a brighter and more sustainable future!
